What to Do When Your Computer Won’t Turn On

A computer that won’t power on can be frustrating, whether it’s a desktop or laptop. Before assuming the worst, follow these basic troubleshooting steps to diagnose and fix the issue.

🚀 Brought to you by Axio Networks, an award-winning managed IT provider in Scottsdale, Arizona. We help businesses and individuals troubleshoot and maintain their IT systems for maximum uptime.

📌 Step 1: Check for Power Connection Issues

For desktops: Ensure the power cable is securely connected to the PC and wall outlet.
For laptops: Check if the charger is plugged in and the power brick light is on.
Try a different power outlet – A faulty outlet could be the issue.
If using a power strip, bypass it and plug directly into the wall.

If there’s no response, move to Step 2.

📌 Step 2: Look for Signs of Life

Listen for fans, beeps, or blinking lights.
If lights blink or fans spin briefly and stop, there may be a power supply issue.
If no signs of power at all, move to Step 3.

No power indicators mean checking the power supply next.

📌 Step 3: Perform a Power Reset (Hard Reset)

A power reset can drain residual electricity and restore power.

For Laptops:

  1. Unplug the charger.
  2. Remove the battery (if possible).
  3. Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the charger back in without the battery and try turning it on.

For Desktops:

  1. Unplug the power cord.
  2. Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cable and try turning it on.

A power reset can resolve startup issues caused by lingering power inside the components.

📌 Step 4: Check the Power Adapter or Power Supply

For laptops: Try a different charger if available.
For desktops: Ensure the power supply switch is on (I instead of O).
Test with another power cable (from another computer or device).

A faulty charger or power supply could prevent the computer from turning on.

📌 Step 5: Check for Display Issues (If It Sounds Like It’s On but Shows No Image)

Look for blinking power lights or fan noise—the computer may be on but the screen is blank.
Press Caps Lock on the keyboard – If the light responds, the system is running, but the display may not work.
Try an external monitor – If using a laptop, connect to an external screen to check for display issues.

If the system seems to be running but has no display, there may be a monitor or graphics card issue.

📌 Step 6: Remove External Devices (For Desktops and Laptops)

Unplug all USB devices, external drives, and peripherals.
✔ Try turning on the computer with just the power cable and monitor connected.
✔ If it turns on, a USB device may be causing a conflict.

A malfunctioning USB device can prevent proper startup!

📌 Step 7: Listen for Beep Codes or Error Lights (Desktops Only)

If your computer beeps when turning on, it’s giving an error code.

  • 1 Beep: Everything is fine.
  • 2-3 Beeps: Memory issue (reseat RAM).
  • Continuous Beeping: Power or hardware issue.

Refer to your motherboard manual to decode the beep sequence.

Beep codes help identify faulty hardware!

📌 Step 8: Check the RAM and Internal Components (Advanced Users)

If comfortable opening your computer:

Turn off the PC and unplug it.
Reseat the RAM: Remove it and place it back into the slot.
Check for loose cables inside the case.

If reseating RAM and checking connections don’t help, there may be a deeper hardware issue.

📌 Step 9: Boot Into Safe Mode (If It Powers On but Won’t Load Windows)

Turn on the computer and press F8 (Windows 7) or Shift + Restart (Windows 10/11) to access Safe Mode.
If it starts in Safe Mode, a driver or software issue may be causing startup failure.

Safe Mode helps diagnose software-related startup issues.

📌 Step 10: Seek Professional Help

If none of these steps work, your computer may have a failed power supply, motherboard, or other hardware issue.

For desktops: Consider replacing the power supply unit (PSU).
For laptops: Check if the battery needs replacement.
Contact IT support or a professional technician for further diagnosis.
